May, 2019-my first out of lines catch, in the Dominican Republic.
When I tell people that my favorite hobby is flying trapeze, the response is usually a confused look. And when I repeat myself I say, "Yes, like circus. Like jumping off a board and flying through the air!"
My first trapeze class was in September 2013 at TSNY in New York City. My best friend has been going for years, and I thought maybe it would help with my fear of falling. My first class was terrifying and exhilarating! I still remember the high afterwards; feeling like I was so strong and capable or anything!
About a year later, my friend Wei-Ping asked me if I'd like to go to trapeze in DC and I immediately said yes, not even realizing we had a trapeze school. I had the same feeling of exhilaration and accomplishment, and knew this was something I had to do on a regular basis. At first, I only wanted to go to classes when I knew a friend would be there, but I remember the first time I went alone, at 8:30 AM on a Saturday morning. It was a feeling of wanting to fly more than wanting to be social. I wanted to get better!
Almost six years later, I go to my trapeze class at least once a week, often twice. I have made friends outside of music for the first time in my adult life! I've gotten stronger, I've conquered fears I didn't even know I had, I've cried, ripped my hands open, and banged myself up quite a bit. But I haven't loved something this much since I realized how much I loved playing the horn. I have the same feelings of excitement when I learn something new, and I want to work so hard to be the best I can be. Most importantly, I know I'm capable of so much more than I thought. And...it feels amazing to fly through the air.
