Salkantay Mountain
Peruvian Andes
August, 2016
In August, I went to Peru with two of my good friends. We spent a few days in Cusco, adjusting to the altitude and exploring the region, before we started the 5 day Salkantay Trek. We used Llama Path as our guide, and we are so glad we did. This was a tough trek, but luckily there was enough time each day to go at your own pace. The altitude was really challenging for me! But the scenery made it all worth it.
The first night camping we were VERY cold! We camped at Soraypampa, and even with all my layers, hat, and gloves, I was shivering and barely slept. I wish I had brought a sleeping bag liner.
Once we got climbing the next day we all warmed up, and were rewarded at the top of the pass with hot tea, sandwiches, and stunning views!

Our group at the top of the pass
Our group definitely bonded on this hike! With four full days of hiking, eating, and camping, we talked all day long. We felt so lucky to be with such a great group of people from all over the world.
While the highlight for me was the journey, once we got to Machu Picchu, I couldn't help but feel that I was in a magical place. We watched the sun rise as we stood quietly together. It was a moment I'll never forget.
